The GMT-Master was developed to meet the specific needs of airline pilots. It became the official watch of several airlines, among them the famous Pan American World Airways, better known as Pan Am. Its most distinguishing visual feature was the two-tone bezel which marked daytime from nighttime hours.
As intercontinental travel developed in the 1950s, airliners began to fly swiftly across several successive time zones. For the first time it became important to know the time in various places in the world, simultaneously. It was the dawn of the jet age, and Rolex responded with a watch to match the spirit of the times.
The iconic red and blue bezel made its debut on the 6542. Known to collectors as the āPepsiā bezel, due to its color scheme being reminiscent of the well known cola brand, the blue half presents night hours (18:00 to 06:00) and the red half, day hours (06:00 to 18:00).
During the 1950s, two highly renowned names in luxury goods paired up to offer co-branded merchandise to their discerning clientele. These two companies were Rolex and Tiffany & Co. and the relationship lasted around three decades. Rolex watches that were retailed at Tiffany & Co. stores would often bear the jewelerās logo on the face of the watch and today these pieces are highly coveted by watch collectors and vintage aficionados for their exclusivity and little piece of history.
This all original vintage stainless steel Rolex GMT-Master, Reference 1675 – Caliber 1575 watch has a rare black matte Mark IV “Tiffany dialā . The watch is in superb condition and mechanically perfect. The serial number of 5152-XXX attests to the manufacturing year of 1978 and its authenticity is guaranteed. The GMT-Master is powered by the 1575, 26-jewel automat- ic movement, beating at a rate of 19,600 A/h and it is pressure proof up to 50m/165ft.
The hour markers have aged to a lovely uniform cream color and the tritium markings with the hour hands matching perfectly. The 78360 stainless steel oyster bracelet is secured with a flip- lock clasp and attached to the watch with 501 end links. The pristine 40mm case has pierced lugs and a waterproof screw-down crown. The original “Pepsi” bezel has faded to a highly collectible lighter blue and bordeaux color and the acrylic crystal is free of any blemishes.
