âThese were the go-to vehicles for U.N. peacekeepers and warlords alike, and in many places they still are. The idea of the FJ40 being tough enough to handle the harshest conditions on the planet took root in the subconscious back then and has not only endured right up to present day, but blown up like tech stock prices in the â90s. By so many standards, the FJ40 Land Cruiser is the definitive 20th century 4Ă4. With an international pedigree like a Land Rover, the rugged simplicity of a Jeep and swagger like an old Bronco, the FJ is a greatest hits album of classic trucks. Fun to look at, sure, but driving one will take your appreciation to a whole new levelâ.
The story of the Toyota Land Cruiser J Series (FJ40 / BJ40 etc.) starts in the Philippines during the Second World War, the Japanese had invaded the nation, along which much of the rest of East Asia, and they found an abandoned Jeep that had been left by retreating American forces.
There is a little contention as to exactly which Jeep or Jeep-like vehicle it was that they found, most sources say it was either a Willys Jeep or a Ford GPW (Fordâs Jeep), but some claim it was an American Bantam BRC 60 Mark II. Toyota themselves havenât included any reference to this captured vehicle in their own history of the Land Cruiser, and instead pick up the story in the 1950s.
Whichever vehicle it was, we know that it was an American military 4Ă4, and we know the Japanese military immediately recognized how useful it would be to have their own version. It was shipped back to Japan, and Toyota was tasked with building a local version using as many off the shelf parts as possible â they were also instructed to make sure it didnât look too much like a Jeep.
The FJ40 was in production from 1960 to 1984, and all the way up to 2001 in Brazil. It was Toyotaâs best-selling model in the United States between 1961 and 1965, an easy accomplishment seeing as it was the only new Toyota sold here in the U.S. during those years. By 1965 global production had reached 50,000 units. By 1973 300,000 of them were roaming the planet in either hardtop, soft top, station wagon or pickup form.
The âFâ in FJ refers to the Type F engine and the J stands for jeep, meaning the more generic WWII-borne use of that term and not the brand Jeep currently owned by Fiat Chrysler. The â40â refers to the displacement of the inline-six engine and the âLand Cruiserâ name was conceived in 1954 by Toyota technical director Hanji Umehara who said: âI had to come up with a name for our car that would not sound less dignified than those of our competitors⊠that is why I decided to call it âLand Cruiserâ.
The folks that grew up seeing these vehicles on the nightly news or in the pages of National Geographic now have the money to buy them as a pleasure vehicle, seeking to restore some of their youthful adventurousness, all while adding a much needed âcool factorâ to their lives without being ostentatious. It is the happy medium between the tweed wearing, duck hunting Land Rover Series III crowd and the âhold my beerâ Jeep CJ/Ford Bronco contingent.

Chassis No. 311387 was sourced in Colombia and its revival became possible due to the vision of a dedicated team of craftsmen in the countryâs capital.
The â7 de Agostoâ district in BogotĂĄ was named as such because it was founded on the centenary date of the Battle of BoyacĂĄ that took place on 7 August, 1819. Nowadays the district has vibrant fruit and vegetable markets and traders that you would find in any neighborhood, but itâs really all about the cars. The area is notable over and above other districts in that sell automotive parts thanks to the workshops in the area that specialize in classic car restoration. These workshops have become a centre for skills and are supported by the companies fabricating pattern body panels, new flooring, seat coverings and roof linings, hoses, radiators, body glass suppliers, the stores that import OEM parts from all over the world, and the specialists that recondition old parts for use in restorations.

Based on the late â70s and â80s-era FJ40 series trucks, the Leyton codenamed TY-FJ-002A, offers an authentic Land Cruiser experience with discreet improvements, such as a complete nut-and-bolt restoration to factory aesthetics with upgraded front disc brakes, ARB / Old Man Emu Leaf Springs with Nitrocharger sport shock and steering damper â good for about 2.5 inches of suspension lift above stock, 5-speed synchromesh manual gearbox, hydraulic steering assist and a few other tweaks throughout to make the finished product an overall light Restomod for the adventurist who prefers to crawl in classic style with a dash of modern amenities.
The 4,200cc low-revving Toyota OEM Type 2F engine, fully rebuilt to factory specs is responsible for 145 hp and 230 lb-ft, a significant jump of power and performance over the stock configuration.
The utilitarian Militia Green matte exterior with its removable Bimini top is representative of the era and includes a period correct front grille, turn signals, bumpers, mirrors, blindingly effective LED headlights, complemented by off-road LED projectors, Warn 8,000 lbs winch on the front and Hi-Lift jack behind the right front wing. At last the beautiful âcloisonnĂ©â enameled badges further enhance the visual package of this adventurer.
 The interior is equally impressive with air-conditioning, electrically adjustable front custom seats, rear jump seats to accommodate a total of six passengers, a combination of analog and digital instruments cluster and a sound unit with communication and navigation capability as well as a rear view camera.
Responsible for thousands of man hours, the completion of this major undertaking along a second similar car offered also through us, took place in 2020 and the two FJs were imported to Miami as part of a private collection. The automobile has accumulated a total of 226 careful miles since its restoration, always kept in a climate control facility and offered for sale with a free and clear Florida title. This is a turnkey vintage Land Cruiser with a prohibitive cost and time to duplicate, as such we believe this to be an opportunity not to be missed.
