About This Car

“The Gran Sport name has been used on several high-performance cars built by General Motors for its Buick brand since 1965. In the GM brands hierarchy, Buick was surpassed in luxury and comfort appointments only by Cadillac, which did not produce performance models. As a result, the Buick GS series were the most opulently equipped GM sport models of their era. The Buick Gran Sport was launched in 1964 as Buick’s answer to the Pontiac GTO. By 1968 it was on its second-generation body that would carry it through 1972, and the end of mainstream muscle. The 1968 Buick GS was based on a Skylark Custom and available with a 350-cid V-8 with 4-barrel and 280 horsepower. It offered three- and four-speed manual transmissions and two-speed automatic transmission. The California GS added a vinyl roof and was only available with an automatic transmission. The GS 400 offered the 340-horsepower, 400-cid V-8 and was available in coupe and convertible. Three- and four-speed manual transmissions were offered along with a three-speed Turbo Hydra-Matic automatic transmission. Cold-air Stage I and Stage II induction was available from January 1968, and was the performance option of choice. A Stage I equipped GS 400 could run to 60 mph from a stop in 7.5 seconds. The 1972 GS and GS 455 would be the last of Buick’s muscle car line until the introduction of the Grand National ten years later. While no single year of this generation of Buick GS sold particularly well in their day, they are now remembered as one of GM’s premier muscle cars”.

Speedart Motorsports is pleased to announce one of its latest offerings that is representative of GM’s opulence bygone era, finished in a sensational color combination of Flame Orange with Arctic White vinyl top over Pearl White interior upholstery, and authentically refurbished to show-car standards.

The Gran Sport has undergone a rotisserie frame-off restoration at no expense spared with equal emphasis on both cosmetics and mechanics. Chassis 115387 retains its original 350 small-block V8 motor and it is a matching numbers example painstakingly preserved in the course of over 50 years with less than sixty thousand miles recorded at the time of cataloging.

The Fisher Body displays a brilliant paint and chrome finish with well-preserved emblems as well as pristine stainless components and bright ware. The gaps throughout are perfect with the effortless operation of doors and convertible top. The Arctic White vinyl top is unblemished and the matching tonneau cover complements the elegant lines of the Gran Sport when driving al fresco. Its sporting character is further emphasized with a dual exhaust for enhanced performance and sound.

The stylish interior is finished in Pearl White leatherette upholstery with faux wood fascia and a Rally 3-spoke steering wheel.  The seating configuration includes a front split bench with an armrest and rear bench seating with fully functional safety belts all. The preserved trim, dash pad, and loop pile carpet shows extremely well with the original Sonomatic AM radio still present, complemented by the original gauges. The car is equipped with power locks, power windows and the glass throughout is free of any noticeable road rash or delamination. All systems are functioning as intended by the manufacturer and the all-important A/C is in perfect working order. A full-size spare tire is appropriately mounted in the spacious luggage compartment.

The GS has an independent front suspension and a 4-link rear suspension, equipped with a Buick-style 10-bolt differential featuring approximately 3.10:1 ratio and an open differential. The 15” Magnum 500 wheels are fitted with 225/60R15 BF Goodrich Radial T/A tires. Stopping power comprises of power disc front brakes and power drum rear brakes.

The under chassis of the Gran Sport is equally impressive upgraded with a new fuel tank and primed floorboards, a new stainless exhaust system, additional bracing, and replaced brake and fuel lines. The powder-coated frame is wonderfully detailed with straight front frame horns and an impeccably maintained core support.
