About This Car

“Automobiles may indeed be sex symbols, as has been suggested in song, fable, and the occasional serious treatise. Even so, sexiness is a quality almost impossible to detect in most of the Mercedes-Benz cars with which we are acquainted. Granted, the old Gullwing coupe was pure, purple passion on wheels; granted, the new C111 has an impressively visceral appeal that may well be sexy if a racing car/space capsule mix is what grabs you. But nowhere do we see an appeal to prurient interest in the mainstream of Mercedes-Benz automobiles. The word that comes to mind is “Presence”. When this V8 cruised with its top down it was King of the road, and we think it’s still King today. The lines and proportions are masculine but elegant. The top has to be down or else it’s lesser coupe equivalent might steal the limelight.

The graceful and stylish W111 served as the flagship Mercedes-Benz production model from the 1960s into the early 1970s. Initially offered in two- or four-door variants, the four-seat coupes and cabriolets outlived their defined “Heckflosse” sedan stablemates by several years, thanks to designer Paul Bracq’s timeless, sophisticated styling. Assembled and hand-finished to a high standard in the legendary Sindelfingen limousine factory using the finest materials and fittings available, the W111 offered quality, luxury, and style on par with automobiles like the more expensive Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow while delivering the refinement and engineering excellence that Mercedes-Benz buyers expected. The 280SE 3.5 Cabriolet was quite an expensive car when new, costing approximately $14,500 when optioned, which was about the same price as a brand new Ferrari 275 GTB a few years prior”.
